Understanding the Online Threats: Viruses, Spyware and Malware | Free Antivirus Software


When you start to think about all the things that can go wrong when surfing the Internet, the Internet will seem like a very scary place. Fortunately, netizens as a whole are getting smarter and smarter, and better able to perceive dangerous behaviors.


Pages with dozens of download buttons - or auto-check boxes prompting us to download things we didn't want - are no longer as functional as they used to be, but that doesn't mean there aren't hackers out there trying to come up with new means of deception. To protect ourselves from these threats, it is important to first understand what they are and what the difference between them is.

Understanding the security threats on the Internet and in what they differ

Malware is an abbreviation for malicious software, meaning that the majority of them limit these threats to the term viruses, while the correct term for them is malicious or malicious programs. The latter comes in many forms, and it's a generic term that can be used to describe many things, such as viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, and others. In short, it is a program or file of bad intent.

Viruses

It is important to note that the infection does not actually occur due to the presence of infected files on your computer only, but rather the infection occurs when you run the program for the first time, whether through automatic launch, installation directory, or an executable file opened by the user.


Once you open - or run - the program, the infection will occur, and it will be very difficult to find a quick way to rid your computer of the virus due to the nature in which it works.


Unlike other threats, viruses have no other purpose than to try to render your computer inoperable. Some of these viruses are good at doing this work, while others are very weak and easy to detect.


Adware or adware programs

While its harm is relatively moderate in most cases, adware or adware may be one of the most nuisance threats that we will talk about today.


The adware is combined with legitimate applications or with software, which makes initial detection somewhat difficult. A more common example is the box at the bottom of the download link where it asks you to "include an X in the free box" - well, this "X" is often the program that contains Adware. If you are not sure what these programs are, or how they work, do not download them.


Trojans

The name Trojan Horse was taken from the Trojan Horse, and it is a giant wooden horse that was used to hide the Greek soldiers when they entered Troy during the period of the Trojan War. This is the same way a Trojan damages your computer. It hides malicious code inside a seemingly innocuous program or file to access your device. Once inside, the program installs itself on your device and communicates with the server in the background without your knowledge. This gives a third party access to your computer through what is commonly referred to as a backdoor - a program that runs in the background that hackers use to control your computer.


While granting third-party access to your computer is scary in and of itself, the implications of such access are appalling. What complicates matters is the size of the small traces that the backdoor leaves, which keep the user in the dark and unaware of anything. The only advantage of the backdoor is the nature in which it works.


Spying programs

Spyware is the most common piece of malware on the Internet. While it is quite deceptive in nature and quite annoying, most spyware programs are relatively harmless. Usually, spyware is used to monitor browsing behavior to better serve relevant ads. What makes it worse is the way companies collect your data. Instead of relying on pixel tracking - or cookies - like most major corporations, spyware behaves like Trojans in the first place.


Malicious forms of spyware are the most dangerous. While typical spyware is used for ad serving purposes, malicious spyware delivers sensitive data to another user, or to a server. This data can include emails, photos, log files, credit card numbers, banking information, and passwords.


Scareware and Ransomware

Scareware and ransomware differ in their approach, but their ultimate goal is to collect money by manipulating the user.


Horror programs most of the time take the form of programs that pop up and tell you that your computer has been infected with some kind of malicious program. When you click Remove (often) to get rid of these malicious programs, you will have to pay to purchase the full version before the program can clean your system and rid it of infections or threats.


Getting rid of ransomware works a little differently in the sense that after installing this type of malware, your system will often shut down and you will be prevented from controlling it until you pay a ransom to restore the use of this information technology. While ransomware is generally easy to remove, it can be very frightening to non-intelligent computer users. Many would think that they would have to surrender and pay a ransom to regain control of the device.


Worms or Worms 

Worms are by far the most harmful form of malware. Whereas a single computer and virus attacks depend on the user to share infected files for them to spread, worms exploit security holes in the network and infect the device within minutes.


Networks with vulnerabilities are targeted by inserting a worm into it and letting it pass (often unnoticed) from one computer to another. As it passes from one device to another, the infection spreads and the entire device is infected - or - the worm is isolated by removing the infected devices from the network.

If you use the Internet, there is certainly no foolproof way to avoid all of these threats, but there are definitely things you can do to protect yourself.


Maintain the operating system and all your programs by downloading updates as they become available.

Install good antivirus software to keep viruses away.

Use a firewall to monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic.

Avoid unsafe downloads from unknown, untrusted sources.

Use free antivirus software or malware detection programs to check suspicious links before opening them.

Avoid pirated software.
