How to protect yourself from phishing attacks

Phishing is an attempt to get people to reject personal information (usually financial information) using some form of communication. Fraud usually involves convincing the victim that the form of communication used (such as email or voicemail) is a legitimate message from a trusted company or government agency.

What is phishing?

According to cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes, the word "phishing" refers to the use of fraudulent messages to lure victims and persuade them to give up their personal information. In this case, the phishing messages are considered "bait," and the victims who fall in love with the scammers providing their information are "fish" that the fraudsters are trying to catch.

But the scam messages themselves don't always have to be scams. Phishing attacks or attacks can appear in various forms of communication such as text or voice messages.

Some phishing attacks contain multiple links to fake websites that may record your personal information. Sometimes, phishing scams (especially those that involve email) may contain attachments or links that contain malware or even ransomware.

Various types of phishing

As mentioned earlier, phishing messages don't only show up in planned emails. There are different types of phishing, and they often use different communication methods to trick people into giving away their personal information.

There are several types of phishing attacks:

Email fraud

You are probably the most familiar with phishing emails. These emails are often designed to look like legitimate messages from a trusted organization like a government agency or bank.

These emails may require you to disclose personal information and may ask you to specify the website link provided. However, the website is usually a fake site that scammers can use to obtain their username and password when trying to enter a fake site. This can be particularly problematic if fraudsters have successfully used fraudulent emails to steal your online bank accounts or other sites that deal with sensitive financial information.

Smishing

Phishing is a form of phishing that is done using text or SMS messages. Like phishing emails, silly text messages often ask you to click on a link inside them, allowing fraudsters to hijack your personal information.

Trolling

Phishing (also known as "voice phishing") is phishing that occurs through voice mail and phone calls. Basically, it is a phone fraud designed to trick or intimidate its victims into giving up personal information over the phone. This stolen personal information can lead to victim identity theft, which in turn allows fraudsters to do things like open new credit cards in the victim's name.

How to protect yourself from phishing attacks

Even with the best spam filters and call blocking apps, you still have to deal with phishing emails, phishing, and phishing attacks. When you come across them, here are some ways to protect yourself from their harmful effects.

Avoid links in phishing emails or text messages ... As the cybersecurity company Webroot points out, it's best to use a web address or a link you've found yourself using a web search or the web address of a company you've used previously. If the message looks suspicious, do not select its links or attachments. Even if the message "warns you" about a problem with your account, you can easily check the status of your account using a different link.

Avoid and block unknown numbers from suspicious calls ... When it comes to phishing or phishing, it is best not to answer phone calls from unknown callers, if possible. If the incoming call seems suspicious to you or the fraudster leaves a strange voicemail, go ahead and block your phone numbers. Many phones have a phone number blocking feature and you can use call blocking apps as well.

Don't download apps using text messages ... Just as you don't choose a link or an attachment in a scam email, you shouldn't download the attachments from a text message. Cybersecurity company Norton by Symantec advises that apps that you obtain through a trusted app store "must undergo [strong] testing procedures before they are released to the market," which means that app store apps are generally more reliable than a random download from a text message.
