Parental Control Methods on a Computer | Antivirus Software


With the advent of computers and the Internet in every home, most people have received unlimited access to information of various contents. And besides the obvious advantages, this trend has a number of negative consequences - unrestricted access to materials of a pornographic and naturalistic nature, malicious sites and programs has opened. Such content is especially dangerous for children. Therefore, it is important to use various parental controls to help keep your child safe from harmful materials.


Method # 1. Windows parental controls

In Microsoft Windows, starting from version 7, you can organize parental control over the use of your computer. The operating system allows you to set the intervals in which the computer will be available, as well as restrict the launch of certain programs, games and applications. To configure this type of control, you must have a Windows account with administrator rights and an account for which the restrictions will apply. You can create them in the "Control Panel", "User Accounts".


It is important to know that if your administrator account is not password protected, then the child can easily bypass the restrictions.


In the "Parental Control" group, select "Enable, use current settings". After that, you need to configure individual parameters: select the time intervals during which children can be at the computer, the permissible age category of games, and also set a ban on the use of certain programs.


Method number 2. Using antivirus tools

Let's look at the parental control capabilities using the example of the Kaspersky Anti-Virus module called Internet Security. It allows you to limit the time you use your computer and block certain programs, as well as introduce an Internet filter for sites, limit the time spent on the network, enable filtering of correspondence by certain words, restrict the disclosure of the user's phone, address and other personal data.


The tabs “Computer”, “Programs”, “Internet”, “Communication” and “Content Control” are presented in the left part of the module window.


In the "Computer" tab, the user has the ability to set the time for blocking and operating the PC.

In the Programs tab, you can block games by content, age rating, and various types of programs such as web browsers, torrent programs, and more.

The "Internet" tab allows you to block access to the network at certain hours, prohibit visits to sites for adults and restrict the download of various types of content (music, video, programs).

The "Communication" tab provides the ability to restrict the exchange of messages on social networks.

In the "Content Control" tab, you can prohibit the transfer of personal data (payment card numbers, home address, etc.), as well as track the use of invalid keywords.


Method number 3. Using Protegent360

The parental control can be performed not only by software but also by hardware. Consider the restrictions on using the Internet using and Protegent360 Antivirus Software services.


The complex is a cloud-based Internet service that protects your computer from malicious sites. Sites with questionable content are blacklisted by the project. At the moment, this list contains more than 6.5 million addresses. At the same time, there are practically no "false" responses. Among others, phishing (fraudulent) sites, resources with viruses and Trojans are blocked.  The agent is available for Windows operating systems. With it, you can set up an Internet filter for different computer users. A specialized version of the filter is available for educational institutions, which complies with Russian legislation in terms of protecting children from harmful information.


The service allows for three types of filtration. No resource blocking occurs in basic mode. Safe mode blocks potentially malicious sites, including those created for the purpose of fraud that spread viruses. In family mode, sites containing pornographic or erotic content are added to this list.


You can activate the above types of hardware filtering in the control panel of the router, in the "Security" tab.
