The realities of the modern information society dictate new requirements for the security of personal data, as well as the need to form a culture of handling our information.


What is personal data? In the Russian Federation, the Federal Law of the Russian Federation of July 27, 2006, No. 152-FZ "On Personal Data" is currently in force, which explains what personal data is and how exactly you need to handle it.


So, personal data is any information that relates to a specific person or information that will allow you to uniquely identify a person. If in a conversation with your friend, you told something about a person that would allow your interlocutor to find out who it is, you have transferred personal data.


Personal data includes last name, first name, patronymic, year, month, date and place of birth, address, family, social, property status, education, profession, income, passport series and number, and other information contained in the text of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation No. 152-FZ, in article 3.


Who is a personal data operator?

If you register on any site, entering information about yourself, or get a job filling out forms in the HR department, you transfer your data to the operators of personal data, whether it is the owner of the site, an employee of the HR department or the organizer of any survey.


The same Federal Law states that a personal data operator is a state body, municipal body, legal entity or individual organizing the processing of personal data.


What does the processing of personal data mean?

Imagine that we are registering with you in a system where we are asked to enter our full name, date of birth and gender. In this case, the operator of the personal data is the organizer of this website. The process of processing our data may look like the very fact of collecting this data, or as storing, changing and deleting this information from the database of the site, as using our data, for example, in order to offer us a product or service based on what age and gender we are, etc.


The text of the law on personal data may seem difficult to understand, so let's try to remember the most important thing: the information containing any personal data does not belong to anyone but us, and if someone wants to receive it, he must justify this desire and get our permission, or have a legal basis for processing. In addition, this person (or company) must ensure the total security of this information.


Our personal data can only be processed for clearly defined purposes, no one can process it just like that! If we are asked to indicate our passport details when registering for the competition, then this is extra information that is not required to participate in the competition, and such collection is illegal.
