However, despite the obviousness of all these threats, most parents are unable to protect their own children. The problem lies in the lack of really effective tools in the context designed to control the use of the global network by minors. In fact, everything that existing security tools can offer (most often they is built into internet products) are so-called "stop lists". That is lists of forbidden words, the presence of any of which leads to blocking the loading of a particular page. However, this option cannot be classified as truly effective. Firstly, it is simply unrealistic to describe all the words that I would not like to show to children. Secondly, this approach leads to numerous false positives. For instance, if you add the term "drugs" to the stop-list, then all news sites will be blocked if this word appears in the headline of one of the news (for example, dedicated to the capture of another drug dealer). In addition, we must not forget that in many families, children know the computer better than their parents. This further complicates the task of setting restrictions on the Internet.

However, the situation has recently changed. In the second half of May, a completely new product called KinderGate Parental Control appeared on the market. Its developer is Entensys, known for its UserGate Proxy & Firewall. Today we will look at the principle of operation of this protection system, and also take a closer look at the process of configuring security settings so that even a novice computer user could cope with it.

How KinderGate Parental Control Works

The product "KinderGate Parental Control" is a filter that allows you to implement a multi-sided Internet policy for minors. To do this, it has several different tools. The most, perhaps, the main one is the ability to block websites based on their topic. Moreover, the very principle of operation of the filtration system, in this case, is very different from the use of "stop lists".

The filtering implemented in this product works using Entensys URL Filtering technology. What it is? This technology assumes to use a special database, not the content on it (that is, in fact, checking for the presence or absence of forbidden words), to determine the topic of the site. It stores links to web projects along with the categories to which they refer. That is, the principle of operation of the filtration system is as follows. When a child tries to go to a site, the system makes a request to the database indicating his address and receives in response the category to which he belongs. If this category belongs to the category prohibited by parents, then access to the site will be blocked, and a warning page will appear instead.
