Protecting Against Viruses and Threats in Windows Security


The Virus and Threat Protection section of Windows Security allows you to scan your device to make sure there are no threats. You can also run different kinds of scans view the results of your previous virus and threat scans, and advantage from the latest defense offered by Windows Defender Antivirus.

In the current threats section, you can:

  • Scan your device to identify possible threats

  • View identified threats on your device

  • View threats that were quarantined before infecting your device

  • View all items identified as threats that you have allowed to run on your device

  • View the date and time of your device's last scan and the number of files scanned

  • Perform a specific type of analysis

Run the scans you want

Although Windows Security is turned on and automatically scans your device, you can perform additional scanning whenever you want.

  • Quick analysis . Worried about doing something that might put a suspicious file or virus into your device? Select Quick Scan (called Scan Now in previous versions of Windows 10) to immediately check if any recent threats are present in your device. This option is useful when you don't want to run a full scan on all your files and folders (which takes time). You may receive a notification asking you to run another type of scan at the end of the scan.

  • Analysis options . Click this link (called Run new progressive scan in previous versions of Windows 10) to select one of the following advanced scan choices:

    • Full analysis . Scans every file or program that is running on your device, to make sure nothing dangerous is running.

    • Personalized analysis. Scans only the files and folders that you select.

    • Windows Defender offline scan . Use the latest definitions to scan your device for the latest threats. Run this scan when you believe your device has been exposed to malware or viruses, or if you want to scan your device without being connected to the internet.

Protect your device with the latest definitions

Definitions are files that contain information about the latest threats that may infect your device. Windows Security uses the definitions each time a scan is run. Microsoft automatically downloads the latest definitions to your device, but you can also manually verify that you have the most recent definitions. On the Protection against viruses and threats, under Updates of protection against viruses and threats , select Search Update to search for the latest definitions.

Manage virus and threat protection settings

Use Virus and Threat Protection Settings when you want to customize your level of protection, send sample files to Microsoft, exclude approved files and folders from recurring scans, or temporarily disable your protection.

Manage your protection in real time

Want to turn off real-time protection for a short time? You can use the Real-time protection setting to temporarily turn it off. However, real-time protection activates automatically after a short period of time to resume protection of your device. When real-time protection is turned off, files you open or download are not scanned for threats.

Get access to cloud protection

Give your device access to the latest threat definitions and cloud Antivirus threat detection.

Send us files with automatic sample sending

If you are connected to the cloud with Cloud Protection, you can send sample suspicious files to Microsoft to see if they contain potential threats. Microsoft will notify you if you need to send additional files, and will alert you if the requested files contain personal information.

Protect files from unauthorized access

Use the Controlled folder access setting to manage the folders to which applications can make changes. You can also add additional trusted apps to make changes to these folders.

When you enable Controlled Folder Access, many of the folders you use most often will be protected by default. This means that the contents of these folders will not be accessible or modified by unknown or untrusted applications. As soon as you add folders, they automatically benefit from this protection.

If you see an App is blocked message when you try to use a familiar app, you can simply unblock it. Here's how to do it:

  1. Write or take note of the path of the blocked application.

  2. Select the message, and then select Add Authorized Application.

  3. Find the program you want to allow access to.

Exclude items from virus scans
