The main skills and qualities to have

The data engineer must have multiple technical skills:

master Agile development (DevOps ...);
know the development and administration tools (Postgre SQL , NoSQL, Hadoop, Spark ...);
master database management tools (Cassandra, Bigtable);
know the programming languages (Python, C / C ++, Java , Perl ...);
have knowledge of statistics, modeling and data analysis;
be proficient in technical English;
be rigorous and organized;
know the regulations in force on data  totalsecurity;
be proactive ;
conduct a technological watch;
know how to work in a team and have the sense of listening.

How to become a data engineer?

A bac + 5 is generally required to occupy a position of data engineer. Fairly recent profession, there is no really dedicated training but several diplomas allow access to it:
